Social media is a wonderful thing. It allows us to share our stories, images and opinions with each other. But, like all things in life, it’s not perfect. Social media has changed over time and now it’s not just about sharing stories anymore but it’s about monetizing them as well. But sex workers are being censored and need an alternate social media.

Introduction

Social media is not an equal playing field. Sex workers, adult performers and adult business are not given the same opportunities as non sex workers. Sex workers’ rights and safety it seems is not protected by social media platforms. Censorship is a common complaint.

Why? Because of stigma surrounding sex work – a job that’s legal in most countries around the world, but still considered taboo in many places where it’s illegal to sell sexual services under any circumstances.

Sex workers state they are being silenced on social media and other websites, which prevents them from sharing their work safely and securely.

MoneyShot – NetFlix Director Banned

You’ve probably heard about the recent Instagram fiasco, where Suzanne Hillinger director of NetFlix’s Documentary “MoneyShot” had her instagram account disabled just because she posted a tribute to her film making as it “gave agency and respect to sex workers without exploiting them.”

There is a serious problem with social media platforms like Instagram, Facebook, Twitter and even YouTube whom it seems are influenced by corporate and anti porn interest lobbies.

Some hours later after Hillinger took to Twitter the decision appeared to be reversed but it had not been despite Hillinger receiving an email that her Instagram account access had been restored.

The confusion comes because Instagram had initially reversed it’s decision only to rescind this and have yet to respond publicly on this matter or if they plan on reversing their decision at all.

The censorship of sex workers on social media is nothing new and has been going on for years.

In addition to banning accounts with adult content from their platforms, some social media companies like Facebook have also allegedly shadow banned them — a practice in which users are still able to post but other people cannot see their posts unless they search for them specifically.

Even when the ban isn’t explicit, sometimes the algorithms are used to shadow ban certain accounts because they’re considered to be automatically spam accounts. A shadow ban is a type of ban that prevents a user from posting content or engaging with other users. Shadow bans are often used by social media companies to limit the reach of undesirable users or to hide controversial content from public view.

The biggest problem with shadow bans is that there is no way to know if you have been banned or not. You can’t see the content, but other people can see it and share it. Shadow banning is a form of censorship where social media users are unable to see your posts and comments, even though they may be visible to others on the platform. It’s called “shadow” because your content remains online but isn’t searchable by other users in any way–it’s as if it doesn’t exist at all!

If you suspect that this has happened to your account, there are tools available which allow you to check whether or not shadow bans are being actively used against specific accounts (such as this one). However, these tools aren’t perfect; sometimes they’ll give false positives because they use different criteria than those used by actual social media companies like Twitter or Facebook when determining whether someone should be de-emphasized in search results due their behavior rather than simply deleting their entire account altogether.
