UK Network TV Channel Commissions Porn Documentary

Monday, October 8th, 2018

The British network TV station Channel 4 has announced that a three part documentary series on porn entitled Generation Porn, according to this article.

Channel 4 was renowned for being the most open-minded TV station in the UK throughout the 80s and 90s but has since then become just as dull and narrow-minded as all other mainstream TV stations.

So I’m not expecting an especially balanced look at porn from this, especially when they bandy around phrases like “modern internet epidemic” in their press release.

Hot Girls Wanted Series Draws Widespread Industry Criticism

Wednesday, May 3rd, 2017

Oh dear.

And there I was, a couple of weeks ago, suggesting it looked as though some lessons had been learned from the criticisms that the orginal documenatary film had received from the porn industry. Not so!

If anything, the follow-up series has drawn far more criticism than the source film and some of the shots that have been fired at it are actually downright worrying.

Gia Paige‘s claim that the makers violated her privacy as well as Tyler Knight claiming that he was lied to about the involvement of Rashida Jones are both pretty damning charges.

The documentary has been so badly received that it has even led to the Free Speech Coalition publishing an open letter asking Netflix to cease streaming the series citing privacy and ethics violations.

Not too good, is it Chief?

Hot Girls Wanted Series Launches On Netflix

Thursday, April 27th, 2017

I was one of the loudest critics of the Rashida Jones produced documentary Hot Girls Wanted, the film which focused on the recruitment of women to the porn industry in Florida.

A clear polemic though it was, it was a shame that it chose to paint all aspects of porn as negative. Pleasingly though, the spin-off series, Hot Girls Wanted: Turned On, appears to have not only addressed many of these criticisms but also actively celebrate the positive things going on in porn.

The series is available for streaming on Netflix and an interview with Jones, Jill Bauer and Ronna Gradus about the series from Rolling Stone can be read here.

X-Rated 2 Documentary Premieres

Sunday, October 30th, 2016

As reported in a very long article by AVN (don’t read this article if you really want to see this documentary, it spoils half of it!), the premiere of X-Rated 2: The Greatest Adult Stars Of All Time has been viewed by many industry bigwigs and stars.

The original is one of those documentaries that’s an easy sell as long as you don’t take the ‘ranking’ seriously – and this one seems as though it will much the same.

However, the presence of celebrities like Whoopi Goldberg certainly add an intriguing slant to this sequel, as does the suggestion that this one addresses some of the criticisms of the porn industry.

It will have debuted on the Showtime networks in the US by the time you have read this.

Carly Rae Summers Featured In BBC Documentary

Friday, July 29th, 2016

The British porn star Carly Rae Summers is the subject of a new BBC documentary as covered in an article by The Mirror here.

I think by far the most interesting part of this article is where she claims that she has been paid as little as £10 (about $13) an hour for some of the porn shoots she has done.

Considering the size of the companies that she generally works with these days, that’s a pretty shocking statistic. No porn star should be made to work for that little amount of money, no matter how much they enjoy their job.

If you are the porn company that paid her or anyone else this absolute pittance, then you’re a fucking disgrace.

Nikki Night Talks Being A Camgirl Coach

Sunday, March 20th, 2016

Video The Porn Industry’s First Camgirl Coach Fusion

This is quite an interesting little documentary about the story of Nikki Night, a former live cam performer who has since reinvented herself as someone who has now regarded as the porn industry’s leading coach of live cam models.

It’s an intriguing little story and, certainly, in this day and age where cam models can often earn way more than they would if they were recording porn movies or shooting photo galleries, it’s hardly surprising that the existence of such people would be out there.

That said, dare I ask if the live cam scene has lost a lot of its ‘innocence’ in the last few years? It used to be the case that the vast majority of such performers were people just doing it all from their bedroom on a ropey webcam.

Nowadays it’s often studio set, porn stars are increasingly using live shows to provide content for fans, and you of course now have ‘coaching’. I understand why this has happened and I don’t have a problem with it, per se. But I kind of miss those old days of live cam shows too.

‘Gay For Pay’ Documentary Causes Stir

A New MTV True Life Features Gay Porn Stars Who Are Straight

MTV’s True Life series of documentaries has received a fair amount of critical acclaim for the diversity of the subjects it covers, even though it’s a channel on which they should be playing MUSIC!

Their latest offering covers the ‘gay for pay’ porn performers out there, focusing especially on the careers of two young guys and their personal lives as well as their professional ones.

It’s always interesting to me that such a fuss is made about ‘gay for pay’ as nobody bats an eyelid when a straight woman has sex with another woman in porn. Yet when it’s guys it’s a completely different matter.

Time we changed that perception, isn’t it?

Revenge Porn Documentary Earns Mixed Reviews

Tuesday, August 18th, 2015

Television Revenge Porn

A documentary about revenge porn, entitled Revenge Porn, which aired on Monday night on network TV in the UK has earned a mixture of praise and criticism for its presenter Anna Richardson.

The show saw her upload pictures of herself to a well-known revenge porn site only to see her inundated with abusive and disturbing comments about the pictures.

While some reviewers praised her courage in literally exposing herself in this way and potentially widening debate about the subject, others criticised the staged feel to her reaction to some of the comments and felt it was too light-hearted on some fronts.

I guess that’s always the problem with such a show, especially for network TV. First and foremost, it DOES have to be entertaining and I’m not sure some subject matters always lend themselves to that.

Fusion To Air Documentary About Miami Porn Scene

Saturday, July 18th, 2015

Tomorrow night (July 19th) from 10pm EST, the Fusion channel in the USA is to air a one hour documentary about the Miami porn scene.

Called Miami Porn: Sex In The Sunshine State, it follows various porn entrepreneurs in the area and how they are producing and distributing their own content.

After the recent Miami based documentary Hot Girls Wanted, I would imagine that this is very much likely to be a counterpoint to the porn negative documentary that, nevertheless, garnered a reasonable amount of critical acclaim.

You can read more about it here and you can see a trailer, featuring an appearance from one of the documentary’s participants, Veronica Rodriguez, on YouTube here.
